Silver Creek Tennis Classic

The winner’s circle just got bigger at the first Silver Creek Tennis Classic, held Monday, Jan. 19 at the Silver Creek High School.

For some of the 40 junior tennis players who participated in the round robin, it was their introduction to competitive play. Not only did they experience the drama and splendor of match play, but they also felt good about contributing financially by way of the entry fee to the Silver Creek tennis team.

Faith “Coach” Mason, who runs tennis clinics from her home in the Evergreen area organized the event with two objectives in mind. First, to provide her students with a positive opportunity for competitive tennis play and more importantly, to help raise money to support the local high school sports programs that are in jeopardy of losing funding in 2010.

“I was very concerned when I heard about the possibility of losing the tennis programs in the BVAL league,” Coach Mason said. “I figured I could put together this event and see how much money I could raise. If it went well, then I could maybe do one for every school in the Evergreen league.”

Coach Mason further suggested that some of the programs that are at risk are relatively inexpensive programs to run and with a bit of creativity, parents and local businesses can come up with innovative ideas to raise resources to keep these programs alive.

The event would not have been so successful without the approval from the school’s Athletic Director and the head tennis coach, Roy Seta.

“Instead of giving me a lot reasons why I couldn’t hold the event, they allowed me to reserve the courts for part of the day and provide open parking for the spectators,” Mason adds.

Congratulations to the winners:

Challenger Division: Winner: Connor Wiess, Chaboya Middle Schoool,

Runner-Up: Eugene Lee, Valley Christian.

Novice Division: Winner: Kevin Foltz, Silver Oak Elementary, Runner-Up: Steven Kou, Chaboya Middle School.
