Evergreen Junior Pirates Beat North Valley Team in District Championship

In a major upset, the Junior Pirates from Evergreen Little League defeated the North Valley Junior Red Sox 4-2 in the District 59 championship game played on Tuesday, June 24 at Dixon Landing Field in Milpitas.

The Pirates were the fourth seed in the district's southern divisional playoffs and were 14-7 going into the championship game, while the Red Sox were 19-1 and had dominated the district's northern division.

Pirates' pitcher, Tyler Lym, pitched six innings of fastballs and change-ups to keep the Red Sox team totally off balance and struck out a number of batters.  Backed by a solid Pirates' defense, Lym allowed only one run.  In the first inning, the Red Sox had the bases loaded, but Lym and Pirates' shortstop, Jesus Saldana, each rocketed throws to Pirates' catcher, Ben Westmoreland, to shut down the rally.  Saldana was also the relief pitcher, who closed out the game.

Craig Woo, Zack Ewing, Alex Sosa, Paul Naranjo, Calix O'Hara, and Colton Manusky made dramatic defensive plays to stun the Red Sox.  At a crucial junction of the game when the Red Sox had three players on base in the 5th inning with two outs, right-fielder O'Hara made a game-saving catch to stop the Red Sox from scoring.

A number of other Pirates, including infielders Jeremy Marques, Derrick Ames, Ryan Fong and Mike Terrell played errorless baseball.  In the bottom of the 7th inning with one out, shortstop Marques went deep into the hole to initiate a double play -- one at second and the other at first base -- to end the game.

The Pirates were lead by Manager John Westmoreland and coaches Bill Ames and Michael Terrell.  The team received enormous support from family, friends, and other Evergreen Little League fans, who filled the stands of the North Valley 's home field and outnumbered the Red Sox supporters by three to one.
